Historical overview of the SMAT International Congress

"SCIENCE AND MANAGEMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES AND TRANSPORT”

The congress has developed, through the collaboration within the SIAR (Society of Automotive Engineers in Romania), based on a collaborative effort of the academic world and researchers from the main Romanian university centres (Bucharest, Brasov, Craiova, Cluj-Napoca, Pitesti and Timisoara) now celebrating the XXXth edition. The Ministry of Education, which ensures the patronage of this event, highly recommends our international scientific manifestation.

The event framework has been built on a specific topic with thematic areas distributed as follows: advanced engineering methods, advanced propulsion systems, road vehicles and the environment, modern transport and road traffic systems, special vehicles, materials and technologies targeting aspects of automotive engineering and transport.

The SIAR Congress of 2001 was hosted for the first time by the University of Craiova, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. 289 authors attended the SMAT 2001 edition, delivering 234 works (with 359 authors), published in the Congress Proceedings at Universitaria Publishing House, ISBN 973-80-43-23-4.

Within the previous editions held in Craiova - SMAT 2008  participated 284 authors, affiliated to over 20 universities (Politehnica University of Bucharest, University Transilvania of Brasov, Technical University of Cluj Napoca, University of Craiova, Naval Academy "Mircea cel Bătrân" Constanţa, Ovidius University of Constanta, "Gheorghe Asachi" Technical University of Iasi, University of Oradea, University of Pitesti, Polytechnic University of Timisoara, University of Chemical Technologies and Metallurgy of Sofia - Bulgaria,  Queen's University, School of Computing, Kingston, ON - Canada, The Johns Hopkins University – U.S.A.; Auburn University – U.S.A.), and about 30 research and production organizations (Ford, Dacia - Renault Group, CAD Works Craiova, Cambric Consulting Romania, INMA Bucharest, AVL Austria, Instituto Motori CNR - Italy; Laboratoire de génie des procédés pour l'environnement l'énergie et la sante Paris - France; R.T.R. - France; E.W.D. - The SawLine Company - Germany; Horiba GmbH - Germany; MAHA - Germany; Department of Radiology, Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD - U.S.A .; Center for Computer Integrated Surgery, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD - U.S.A .; Caelynx Europe - U.S.A.). The SMAT Congress of 2014 summoned a number of 134 scientific papers. Seven invited scientific papers were selected for publication and the research work of about 250 authors was electronically edited on the Congress CD. A total of 69 papers (approximately 50%) presented during the congress were specifically reviewed for publication in Applied Mechanics and Materials (Automotive and Transportation Engineering), published by Trans Tech Publishing Ltd, Switzerland, in print version ISBN 978-3- 03835-703-2 and electronically available on http://www.scientific.net.

The SMAT 2014 Congress gathered 211 specialists, 151 authors were from the country and 32 from abroad, respectively 28 students, participants at the special contest in the field of Vehicle Dynamics.
